I thought 蕭若元's article was recent. Still, the reasons remain relevant. You miss out a few things. There were more than one US war ships in that area. Their radars were on. It was the American reported the plane was in South China Sea then China went all out to search the entire area. Check the dates. GEO stationery satellite concept was invented by British scientist Author C. Clark. He also wrote the Book 2001 Space Odyssey. In his second book he described China was the first country to venture the furtherest in space. Russia was the first country to put a satellite (Sputnik) in space. American was shocked by how fast the Russian was developing space technology with the help of German Scientists. However American has some very smart people. They were sitting hugging each other in a room at MIT listening to the Beep signal from the Sputnik. As scientists naturally they were excited by the characteristic of the signal. As signal is moving away from you the wave of the signal is stretched longer we called it the Red Shift effect. So from the signal you can tell the position of the satellite. By reversing the logic we can tell a position on earth. That was the birth of GPS. Likewise if we were to send 2 beams one carrying the signal and the other is a reference beam we can correct the distortion of the signal beam That is how we can talk on the phone in a moving car. So you see the American GPS is a very old technology bounded by the machinery at the time. They tried to create a new system with higher resolution but they run out of money to build a complete system. Another company came in to recover some of the investments and created Sirius Radio. Europe realized they cannot rely on the American any more decided to build their own system. Naturally with the latest technology their system is far better and yield higher resolution. The system is almost complete then Britain tried to commit suicide. In came China, they have the same strategic concern. Again the late comer shines brighter. Furthermore 2 years ago China successfully mounted a quantum computer on a satellite and confirmed the physics principle. No other country has made a quantum computer yet. When the Americans talk you have to treat them like a life insurance salesman. Putting it the other way, when you use a hand held calculator you must do an approximation in you head. For example, Trump let go of Huawei was not because of his Deals with Xi. It was the big IT companies a week ago told Trump in no uncertain terms a huge chunk of the IT industry will collapse because Huawei is their biggest client. These small companies exist or grew big because of Huawei. Three days after Trump fire the first salvo of trade war against China Cook of Apple flew to Washington to tell him that was not on. Trump did not understand that. The rest is history. Apple is dying. Trump just hastened its demise. Back to the main theme. A plane of that size and design (engine hanging low) can only land on well kept runway without breaking up in pieces. The lever between the two seats are heavy by design. If it can be activated it by one person in mid-flight the plane will do something very funny. That rule out the plane was landed by a single pilot. Radar do not just scan 2 miles on each side of the flight path. A lot of pilots do like to fly. They have their own toys. Commercial passenger planes is like a bus. Their response time may take 8 seconds and may be longer. Only fighter jets are designed to hug the ground at 50 feet and change direction according to terrain to withstand 8G stress. That is where one finds the joy of flying instead of being an elevator operator. Therefore the relevance of finding a toy is very little. If you know the size and weight of the plane you would find the American's talking points fantastic much like the Fugitive Extradition Amendments has something to with the Taiwan murder case.
